Making waves in comfort at Lost Shore Surf Resort
Lost Shore Surf Resort, just outside Edinburgh, is Europe's largest inland surf facility. With its vast surf lagoon, dedicated surf school, and year-round events programme, the resort brings an authentic surfing experience to Scotland - a country not exactly famous for warm weather.
That climate raised a unique challenge for Lost Shore. Because of its long, chilly seasons and bracing winds, many people assume surfing in Scotland is only for the toughest. As surfers, though, the team at Lost Shore knew the water itself wasn’t the issue - modern wetsuits keep you warm once you’re in. The real test comes afterwards. Getting changed in and out of a wetsuit is often the coldest part of the experience, so creating warm, comfortable changing rooms became a top priority.
High-traffic entrances, with doors opening and closing constantly, made this even harder to achieve. To tackle the problem, nine Mini Optima air curtains from JS Air Curtains were supplied and installed, through heating and ventilation specialists BPS Group (Blantyre Park Services Ltd). The units were fitted across all main external doors at the resort, with the changing room entrances proving the most critical.
Mark Stewart, Estate Director at Lost Shore Surf Resort, commented,
“People often think you need to be tough to surf in Scotland, but, with the right wetsuit, the water itself isn’t the problem. The worst part is when you come out and have to get changed - that’s when the cold really hits. The Mini Optima air curtains take that dread away. They keep our changing rooms and entrances warm and welcoming, which makes the whole visit so much more enjoyable.”
The Mini Optima air curtain creates a strong but invisible barrier of air across entrances, stopping draughts in their tracks and keeping warmth inside. That’s not just better for comfort - it also means less energy is wasted, which helps the resort run more sustainably.
Slimline and discreet, the Mini Optima blends into its surroundings while doing a powerful job. Quiet centrifugal fans with multi-speed control allow the airflow to be adjusted as needed, while the Advanced PRO controller - with thermostat, door contact, and remote options - makes operation simple and efficient.
Thanks to this installation, Lost Shore can keep the focus where it belongs - on the waves. Guests get a warm welcome, the resort saves energy, and the changing rooms stay comfortable no matter what Scotland’s weather brings.
